Who Is Ralph Maltby?

The Maltby Philosophy is built on a straightforward idea: golf clubs should be engineered for measurable performance, not hype. For more than fifty years, Ralph Maltby has shaped the tools, standards, and design principles that modern clubmakers rely on today. His work centers on tight tolerances, sound engineering, and designs that help real golfers hit better shots.

Engineering With Purpose

Ralph Maltby began his career operating a small repair and custom shop while attending the University of South Florida. After earning his degree, he moved into product engineering roles with major manufacturers like Spalding and Faultless Sports. His early innovations, design patents, and leadership in golf manufacturing all stemmed from the same core belief: a club must be designed intelligently before it can perform consistently.

Building the Foundation of Modern Clubmaking

In 1976, Maltby founded The GolfWorks, which became the world’s leading resource for club repair, custom fitting, and component design. Through The GolfWorks, clubmakers gained access to precision tools, machinery, gauges, and educational materials, all based on engineering, not marketing slogans.

Maltby’s books and measurement systems (including his Playability Factor) became industry standards and helped elevate clubmaking from a craft into a technical discipline.

Performance You Can Measure

The Maltby Philosophy focuses on what actually matters:

-
Consistent manufacturing tolerances
-
Intelligent head design and weight distribution
-
Proper CG locations for forgiveness and stability
-
Real playability metrics; not advertising claims
-
Clubs fit to the individual golfer

His designs prioritize forgiveness, feel, shot consistency, and playability across a wide range of skill levels.

A Lifelong Commitment to Better Golf Equipment

Even after selling The GolfWorks to Golf Galaxy in 2006, Maltby continues to lead research, testing, and education from a state-of-the-art R&D studio. His industry recognition includes:

-
Ohio Golf Hall of Fame induction
-
Professional Clubmakers Society Hall of Fame induction
-
Honorary New Zealand PGA membership
-
A place among Golf Digest’s 36 most powerful figures in golf
